For my redesign of The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black, I brought the trilogy’s watercolor aesthetic to its final, most intense moment. Centering the composition around a serpent—symbolic of the story’s ultimate confrontation—I used fluid washes and layered textures to give the imagery a sense of movement and looming inevitability. Additional elements drawn directly from the narrative are woven subtly throughout the design, creating a visual tapestry that rewards readers who know the world. The result is a cover that feels cohesive with the series yet distinctly final, capturing both the fragility and ferocity at the heart of the story’s conclusion.
